How Risky Is the Average Crypto Token?

The risk-score distribution across 41,537 scanned tokens: 40% score minimal, but a third sit in the elevated band and 1 in 8 is very-high-risk. Why the average misleads.

How risky is a typical new token? Not the headline scams — the ordinary token someone pastes into a scanner before deciding whether to buy. Orixa's ledger holds a risk score for tens of thousands of them, so instead of a vibe we can look at the actual distribution. It is more polarized than most people expect.

The distribution

As of August 2026, Orixa has a latest risk score for 41,537 distinct tokens. On the 0–100 scale, they fall like this:

Two numbers frame it. Forty percent score in the clean 0–24 band. But 45.6% score 50 or above, and 12.6% land at 75+ — the threshold Orixa treats as very-high-risk and publishes in its flagged-tokens report.

The shape is bimodal, not average

The interesting thing is what is missing: the middle is thinner than the extremes around it. A large block of clearly-clean tokens sits at one end, a large block of clearly-elevated tokens (the 50–74 band) sits past the middle, and a sharp critical tail (90–100) sits at the far end. Tokens do not cluster around a "somewhat risky" average — they tend to resolve toward clean or toward concerning, which is exactly what you want a scoring system to do: separate, not blur.

This is why an average score across a portfolio or a chain is close to meaningless. The distribution has two centers of mass; averaging them produces a number that describes neither.

What the caveat is

This is the population of tokens submitted to Orixa, not a random sample of every deployment. People reach for a scanner when something already makes them cautious, so this sample is weighted toward tokens worth a second look — the true share of clean tokens across all of crypto is certainly higher. The distribution describes what people scan, which is the useful question for anyone using a scanner: of the things worth checking, a large minority are genuinely concerning.

What to do with it

  • A low score is common, not exceptional — 40% of scanned tokens earn it. It is a floor for consideration, not a reason to skip your own checks.
  • An elevated score (50–74) is not rare — a third of scanned tokens sit here, and it means real evidence of concern, not a rounding error. Read the reasons, not just the number (see What Makes a Token High-Risk: The Flags Behind the Data).
